FOK JULLE NAAIERS.

8 Nov

Today Die Antwoord left Interscope records due to multiple reasons.
They also released a great, but very odd video for the first track from their newest album & another smaller video explaining a bit about their managers unhappiness with certain language used in it.
Love them or hate them , you can’t say they’re not entertaining.

Let me know if you’d give Die Antwoord a thumbs up or thumbs down & whether or not you like the new video in the little comment box below..

    Thumbs down.
I get they used the little weird guy as a hook before, but move on from this out-weird your previous video cycle. You already did it.
Also. Rap has been saying fags and faggot since it started, mainstream now you can check any Eminem album. Looks more like Interscope was trying to find a nice way of saying “your new song isn’t that good.”

I think they’re playing with the most common, incendiary rap tropes. For one, as you might know, DJ Hi-Tek’s rap lyrics come courtesy of a Mike Tyson interview. Second, I think Ninja’s explanation video (which, wisely, doesn’t mention that they aren’t Hi-Tek’s words, anyway) is a great argument and completely direct and non-shock value oriented, as their videos are. Weird isn’t a schtick, so much as it is the point. 1) It got you (and the rest of the world) to notice the group in the first place. 2) Now that they have toured the world, it’s as much Interscope saying “We don’t think you’re mainstream enough” as it is Die Antwoord feeling they have the funding and flexibility *without* the help of the major label backing to say, “We don’t need to be mainstream enough for you, Interscope. We don’t need to be anything. We will be what we want to be.” I think the consistently “weird” videos are captivating and far from redundant. If you consider their lyrics and videos in a larger scope, you’ll find that Die Antwoord often reference money, hoes and violence like the rap you called old-hat. I happen to believe that they are uber-conscious of what they say and do, and that it’s all a fabulous and thought-provoking show.

The trouble for this sort of shit is that no matter how anarchic or revolutionary it thinks it style choices are, it melts immediately into the amalgam known as show business. DA are just another couple of skinny skanks putting it on to sell me something. I agree with nah, if they’re going to stay in show business, they do need to change their tropes. Failure to adapt will result in them becoming a comically ‘angry’ U2 of the Internets. Oh, wait – already there…

the slang and culture is unique to cape town, south africa. like it or not die antwoord is pushing the boundries, and testing the limits of what is acceptable here. the gangs here are fuck raw and die antwoord is starting to bridge the gap of what is acceptable in popular rap culture. its fresh and in your face, nothing better…

From Max Normal in the 90′s to Constructus Corporation, The Fantastikill, MaxNormal.TV and then finally Die Antwoord. These guys have been pushing what I personally see as the Afrikaans youth & street culture in south africa. Know that culture DOESNT pay in Africa.

    (tokes on his pipe)

Sadly to be an afrikaaner kid has kinda sucked for most of the 80′s & 90′s as they tried to shake off the sins of their fathers and reinvent their identity in a global context. Remember that most of this culture has been firmly rooted around grandmas home cooking and sunday braais(aka BBQ) after church. It was definitely *not* cool.

    (readjusts position in his armchair)

Sure it may not be as elite in the context of other scenes around the world but its making a group of alienated kids realise they don’t have to conform. I think the juvenile nature of their videos speaks to that audience. Like the japanese word “Kaizen” they will continue to make small improvements through each generation.
